« It was celebration everywhere: in every church, in every home around the stump

up there, In front of Nativity scene,
over there; known faces among unknown faces gathered in happy supper;
there were sacred chants, sounds of bagpipes, jubilant childrens’ shouting, contentions of players …
And the streets of our cities and towns, villages, Alpine or marine hamlets
were deserted in the rigid night.
It seemed to me to go to those cursory way, from this house to that one,
to enjoy the collection of the other party;
I held back a little in each, then wished:
