Renzo Piano appointed Senator of life

The archistar Renzo Piano was appointed by Giorgio Napolitano, along with the maestro Claudio Abbado, Professor Elena Cattaneo and Professor Carlo Rubbia, senator for life, as figures who « have distinguished the motherland for outstanding achievements in scientific, artistic and social fields ».


Born in Genova in 1937, in a family of builders. He graduated in 1964 at the Polytechnic of Milan. At first he became a pupil of Marco Zanuso, then worked for many years in Franco Albini’s Studio and finally opened in 1981 RPBW.

Winner, among other things, the Pritzker Prize (Washington), Praemium Imperiale, (Tokyo), Erasmus (Amsterdam), Golden Lion (Venice). Since 1994 he has Godwill UNESCO Ambassador for the City. He built public spaces for communities, museums, universities, concert halls, hospitals. Among his most important projects we can find the Cultural Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Kansai airport in Japan, the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the Museum of the Art Institute in Chicago, the new campus of Columbia University in New York.
In 2004, establishing the Renzo Piano Foundation, based in Genova. A nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of young architects.
