Tokyo wins race to host Games
New National Stadium Japan by Zaha Hadid Architects will host the athletics events.
It is an 80,000 seater stadium, whose opening is scheduled for 2018, which will replace the current Kasumigaoka National Stadium in Tokyo. The facility will host the Rugby World Cup 2019, and will become the main sports facility for the Olympic Games 2020 which will follow those of Brazil. The stadium also looks about football, very follows in Japan, and will comply with all the requirements for the qualification to the FIFA World Cup matches.
“Our desire is to see a stadium designed by someone who shares the bond with this land and who has the wisdom and technology to look at the space” said the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, which together with the Council for the Sports in Tokyo, is responsible for assigning the project.
Hadid is just finished another sport’s adventure in terms of architecture: that is the London Olympics where she made the entire system of aquatic disciplines. The work was particularly innovative in terms of energy saving, accentuated by an innovative natural lighting system that allows to reduce the consumption of electricity.
