The CH07 Armchair, also known as the Shell Chair, is one of Hans J. Wegner’s most iconic and avant-garde designs. First introduced in 1963, the chair was met with mixed reviews due to its unconventional aesthetic, resulting in limited production at the time. However, when Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the Shell Chair in 1998, it quickly gained widespread admiration, becoming a celebrated piece in modern design history.
The CH07’s distinctive floating appearance is created through its wing-like seat and curved backrest, supported by three elegantly arched legs. This design not only enhances the chair's visual appeal but also ensures stability and comfort. The seat and backrest, made from upholstered form-pressed veneer, cradle the user, offering a luxurious seating experience. The chair’s legs are laminated with multiple layers of veneer, with the two front legs crafted from a single piece, demonstrating Wegner’s mastery of form and function.
Wegner’s design philosophy, that a chair should be comfortable, beautiful from all angles, and have no backside, is perfectly embodied in the CH07.

Carl Hansen & Søn’s passion for producing high-end designer furniture is rooted in more than a century of craftsmanship traditions. In 1934 Carl Hansen, handed over the reins of Carl Hansen & Søn, to his son Holger Hansen. This also announced a new era for the company, where focus shifted towards cooperation with some of the most talented designers in Denmark.
