Renzo Frau

Renzo Frau, born in Cagliari in 1881, moved to Milan for military service, attaining the rank of lieutenant. After marrying Savina Pisati, he settled in Turin, a vibrant cultural hub at the time. Initially, he worked as a sales representative for companies like Gribaudi and Dermoide Patent, a manufacturer of faux leather. While on a business trip to Britain, he discovered Chesterfield armchairs and immediately recognized their potential, successfully importing them to Italy. Simultaneously, he was inspired by French and Central European design, leading him to establish Poltrona Frau, an artisanal workshop, in 1912. After starting with "in-style" furniture, Frau quickly transitioned to creating his own designs, transforming Poltrona Frau into a hub for artists and intellectuals. These connections helped the brand gain widespread recognition. During World War I, Frau was recalled to service, leaving the management of the company to his wife, Savina, who continued to grow the business. Poltrona Frau's armchairs soon graced the most prestigious residences, including the royal palace. Renzo Frau passed away prematurely in 1926, leaving behind a significant archive of designs that allowed his wife to continue the company's production in the following years.
