The Omote Rug, designed by Mae Engelgeer for cc-tapis, is a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Japanese tatami mat, exploring its essential structure through refined craftsmanship and modern textile research. Developed in collaboration with cc-tapis artisans, the design reflects a balance between minimalism, material innovation, and tactile comfort.
Produced using an intricate handloom weaving technique, the rug is crafted from natural yarns woven around a soft and insulating felt core. This construction recreates the characteristic flexibility, warmth, and softness associated with tatami flooring while introducing a contemporary aesthetic. The yarns are dyed in Mae Engelgeer’s signature tonal shades, generating subtle chromatic variations and a calm, architectural visual rhythm.
Combining traditional inspiration with modern design, the Omote Rug is ideal for living areas, bedrooms, and lounge spaces, where it adds texture, comfort, and understated sophistication to contemporary interiors.
